Make that the SOUTH EAST side of the road

Drove up and down 38 last weekend. Most of the repairs are exactly where we'd expect them. But they are doing something funky in one spot! On the steeply winding part between South Fork and Jenks Lake East it looks like they are taking the entire mountain down on the east side of the road!! They are moving a TON of dirt. Whats strange is that after almost 50 years of driving that way iin all kinds of weather I have never seen any major issues in that area. Occasionally a rock or two but no mudslides or water issues. Anyone know why they are doing what they are doing? Kind of looks like job security right now.
