| SOUTHLAND - (INT) – Calfire and the US Forest Service have ramped up their readiness during the heat wave in anticipation of volumes of Labor Day weekend visitors to the local mountains.
"We are expecting large crowds escaping the heat in the Forest this holiday weekend," said Acting Deputy Fire Chief Scott Howes. "It is extremely important visitors abide by fire restrictions to avoid starting a large fire that could prompt evacuations and endanger firefighters during the heatwave."
San Bernardino National Forest officials are especially concerned about illegal campfires, which are up 270% year to date. Campfires, as well as BBQs that use wood and charcoal, are only allowed in a small number of developed and staff-monitored campgrounds and picnic areas. They are not allowed in dispersed areas and other developed sites.
Extra personnel will additionally be pre-positioned for initial attack for any fires on the National Forests in Southern California. Story Date: September 3, 2020 | Back to top

| So tell me, just what revenue do these campers with the illegal fires bring to the city? They aren't staying in any rental places, they aren't shopping in the village, they aren't eating in the restaurrants. So why are they so IMPORTANT that we must look the other wayj then the gun is pointed directly at us? | Back to top | |

| There is one weekend we NEVER go to our place in BBC. Labor Day weekend. I think the last time I was up on Labor Day weekend was in 1968 with my mom and family friends at our old place. | Back to top | |

So why are they so IMPORTANT that we must look the other wayj then the gun is pointed directly at us? Since you asked...Prior to my family buying a cabin in BBC about ten years ago I spent a lot of time camping in the hills surrounding Big Bear (I remember spending a very crowded Labor Day weekend tent camping at Hanna Flat about 20 years ago) and off-roading in Holcomb Valley (something I still do regularly on my monthly or bi-monthly trips UTH to work at my family's cabin). Back in the day when my friends and I would camp in Holcomb Valley, Crab Flats or Hanna Flat we still made regular trips into town once, sometimes twice a weekend to have meals, buy groceries, shop at the Village, buy gas and for some reason walk around K-Mart buying things we probably could have waited to buy when we got home ! Even today every time I'm UTH I buy at least one meal or a cart of groceries in-town.
My point is the weekenders, even the campers up in the hills surrounding the Valley are spending money in-town and helping to stimulate the economy. Heck it was one of the reasons why my family bought the cabin they did, where they did (we're less than a mile from Van Dusen Cyn Rd.) Is it a pain having to deal with extra traffic, people, noise, etc? It sure is, which is why I also rarely come to town on Holiday weekends. I agree no one should be having campfires or shooting-off Fireworks and I get tired of literally having to sit in traffic on some of the more popular Forest Roads, but in the end it seems to be helping to keep the lights-on and keeps people working. That's a good thing, right?
Or we can all take to screaming at outsiders and cursing at them. That's the experience a good friend of mine and I had about a month ago at Broadway Burger when an old Woman accused us of being COVID Spreaders and ruining the town for the locals. In our defense we had both been wearing masks (until we'd ordered and sat-down at a table). I offered to show the woman proof that the motorcycle I was riding that day is registered to an address in BBC (so I'm a Weekender but not an Outsider as she put it) but that caused more yelling and swearing from her so we shrugged and returned to eating our burgers. | Back to top

| Yes, the Broadway Burger incident completely off the charts and uncalled for. Have no problem with people coming and up being responsible, civilized, and not waving an 'ENTITLED' flag. And even a few of them can be tolerated. The problem I see is when the ones 'in charge' can turn a blind eye to activities that are illegal and extremely detrimental to the safety of the entire valley. Wouldn't want to upset someone who thought enough to come up to the valley to spend some money and then take the chance of lighting the entire valley on fire becuase they have no common sense. This is not Uncle Joe lighting a chimera in the backyard. I just don't understand that thought process. How far must one bend backwards to accomodate the tourists that we need to 'survive'. | Back to top | |
