Thanks for posting this AE. Kind of stinks for those of us who like to listen to Sheriff activity on the scanner, but if it keeps the deputies safer and improves communication, I'm all for it.

The benefit to SCM is the scanner transcriptions, especially with respect to traffic and wild fires.

Will there be an alternative to broadcast incidents?

As of now, the only thing we can no longer listen to on the Big Bear Scanner is the Sheriff. We still have CHP, County Fire (which includes Big Bear Fire), Cal Fire, Forest Service, Big Bear Lake Patrol, County Roads, Cal Trans, Big Bear Airport, and I'm not sure what else Craig has programmed in there.

Thank you Cammy for clarifying that. We have only lost S.O. on the live scanner.... As Roger said, all other agencies are still on the audio feed and automated dispatches continue to function (which is to me the real benefit as you don't have to be glued to the scanner to know there is a fire somewhere). In any case, I know that SBD county is going Digital and the Big Bear Scanner is digital ready, BUT, if they encrypt, there is no way around that. If they decide to encrypt fire traffic also, then SBD county fire will disappear from all scanners. There are other sources still on the scanner as Cammy Said.... Forest Service, CalFire, etc.

I have always thought that these agencies saw this site as a great public service site to inform folks of incidents, etc, and we have significantly expanded our efforts to keep bad information from showing up here (which can be tough at times).

My hopes are that they only encrypt the S.O. like other counties have and leave fire un-encrypted so we can at least hear what is going on. I totally understand the Law Enforcement concepts that have been in discussion for decades. Scanners CAN be used to avoid the law, that has been proven. I just hope they stop there for now and not blind us all to what else may be going on that impacts our communities.
