Did a portion of that wall still exist at the lake in the late 50's? I seem to remember sitting on one such and watching my dad fish.

I r3ecall when there were three stable where you could rent a horse. I think the last one was in the Baldwin Lake area. Is it gone now?

Baldwin Stables are still there. I just sent guests there a few months ago.

great stuff really liked the peterpan stuff
they came so close, to bad the dream wasn't completly realized. Sure would be a different Big Bear today
I never saw most of the pictures that are on the peter pan spot.
there is so much great stuff around wish more people would share what they have.

I think that rock wall near the lake is still there.
In the late 60's when the lake was filling I got a couple days work helping to repair the dock so it would float when the water came up a little more. Wrong time of year and way to late. The whole point consists of a blue clay that is rock hard when dry and slimy quicksand when wet. it was wet. lake was only about 60 feet away and very flat so you could see it coming
Had to jack up the dock and slide 55 gallon drums or floats (not sure which anymore, maybe both) hard to jack in mud
very messy job. Can't remember what I made but it was good wages but not enough for that job.

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Thu Jan 31 2008, 02:53PM

This is an old map showing the route from Redland to Big Bear.It shows the Clarke's Grade route. I also included a picture of the first car to make the trip up the mountains. Exactly 100 years ago! It was a white steamer that came up Clarke's Grade, went across the Valley (while being chased by a bull . I have written up the account given by the man who made the trip; John A. Heyser of Los Angeles. The entire story is posted at: [Click Here].

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Thu Jan 31 2008, 02:59PM

They really created a world class resort. I like going over to the Big Bear City Post Office and looking across at the old fence posts that are still there.

There were many grand old building in Big Bear that unfortunately burnt down. Of course the Knickerbocker Mansion is fabulous. When we did the original website for Stan, he took us around and gave us some of the history.

Radha, have you look at this page on here with all the photos of the valley?

The stuff is great that you are posting, please keep it comming

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Fri Feb 01 2008, 08:32AM

BigBear.US is mine and yes, we have a couple of AAA maps posted.

Here is a nice photo of what I think is the Village. It shows Jack Preston's Garage, which I've seen in later pictures located in the Village.

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Fri Feb 01 2008, 09:24AM

preston's garage was where villiage pizza starbucks and the liqour store are across from the elks club.
good picture.
a couple of people claim to have made the first trip to the valley.John fisher makes the claim in fun with fritz. not sure of the year. seems to me the snubbin post road or the road van duzen built to holcomb would have been the easiest and were there before the clarks grade/rim of the world highway was.
my grandfathers brother supposedly got sick during the annual first car into the valley contest and eventualy died from it.

Re: Old Photos
, Fri Feb 01 2008, 09:30AM

I have been told the Elks Lodge was the first school up here.

Miss Myrtle, you recognize anything?

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Fri Feb 01 2008, 10:11AM

I don't know what the first school was, but from what I've read the High School was in Heller's Department Store. Here's a photo.

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Fri Feb 01 2008, 10:12AM

BBB
it was the first high school
they had classes there and upstairs in Beards department store. I think in about 30?
I know that is when Harry Burton graduated as the first senior. part of victor valley school system. he graduated with them. My fathers graduarion notice was from victorvalley
in 32 it was only their 16th graduation.
before that time there were not that many people who wintered in Big Bear. One year my granfather was supposedly the only person that stayed.
his family lived in Redlands during the winter and that is where the kids went to school.
actualy there was a school at doble right around 1900 and probably something that passed as school during the holcomb era for the few kids that were there.
church's, trading post, school's & bar's were generaly the first signs of civilization not in that order of course.

Re: Old Photos
, Fri Feb 01 2008, 10:28AM

You know, when they just widened Paine at Village Dr and put the signal in they were delayed when they suposedly had to dig an old gas tank or something out. I had thought it had something to do with the current gas station across the street, but now I bet it was Preston's.

Y'all keep the old pics coming....I love 'em!

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Fri Feb 01 2008, 10:34AM

there are so many gas tanks buried that you wouldn't believe. the old hancock stations tanks would be back from the area.I don't know why they just don't make sure they are empty dump in some kitty litter and fill up with dirt. There are bacteria that will eat any remenant fuel . That is a bad spot because there are so many springs in that part of town. Any pollution would already be done.

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Sat Feb 02 2008, 11:40AM

This is a great image. It's from 1920, and it's Mountain Auto Line and the bank. I'm not sure, but I think the building on the right is Pine Knot Lodge. I've also included two Mountain Auto Line fare cards from the 40's.

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Sat Feb 02 2008, 11:44AM

This is a picture of the fares when the mountain was full of toll roads. Originally, the lumber industry didn't want cars up here because they needed the roads to haul lumber on. When cars were allowed up here they had to give the lumber wagons the right of way. The teamsters were notorious for timing their descent so that vehicles would have to back up a long ways to give room for the wagons.

I'm scanning an old photo album that was lent to me by Lewis Murray, Director of the Lake Arrowhead Chamber of Commerce. It seems his Grandfather came through here at the turn of the century. Re: Old Photos
, Sat Feb 02 2008, 05:25PM

Um, no, mine weren't built until 1992. They don't look like Oak Knoll Lodge either. I am trying to think who has log cabins in a row like that. I will check around....

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Sat Feb 02 2008, 05:58PM

bc was just trying to make a funny.
my first guess would have been pine Knot but then most of the log cabins were not so close together.
some of the later wood ones were, and lined up just like that.
I think knights cabins had some that were that close.
Jerryb might remember better. They would have been some that were behind halls chicken and sugar bear.
do you know what year this was taken?
some of the others in that series might give a clue.
If they were placed in there by the photographer they should be in some order.
most log cabins were not so tightly built and relied on chinking between the logs. Plus no window is strange. they appear to be almost new.
can you tell from the original what is between the camera and the shed looking building in the back?

here is a picture of how most of the pine knot cabins were layed out.

I also have a couple I can't place does anyone have an idea?
my guess first would be near IS ranch but not sure

Re: Old Photos
Hooky Bobber, Sun Feb 03 2008, 08:53AM

I remember the little cabins behind Halls where they built the trailer park. They where in a row like the ones in the photo but the land was flat in front of them, so I do not have a clue as to where those are. Love all the photos of the valley. Bills Grandson what was the name of the lodge north of the school and behind Halls. When I was a kid the cabins looked abandon but they did use the pool and the dorms and main building still.

Re: Old Photos
, Sun Feb 03 2008, 10:29AM

You know, on one of the side streets in back of that area there are still 2 or 3 log cabins side by side like in the photo. Next time I am in that area I will look to see if it might be them in a lesser way.

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Sun Feb 03 2008, 11:05AM

These are fun photos. They are labeled: Big Bear High School 1930.

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Sun Feb 03 2008, 11:54AM

Jerryb
that was knights camp.
After he went bankrupt his father owned that property and he rebuilt his pine knot on a much smaller scale. Turned out to be one of the nicer places. Is the lodge still there?
He was a man who was not loved in the community. Don't know why but everything I find about him is negative. He built nice places. Maybe they were jealous of him.
I don't know if any of his family is left on the hill. I went to school with Ted who I think was a grand son and a couple years older then me.
Radtha
I don't recognize any of those kids in the picture. I don't think any are high school age. Check your 32 annual and see if any are familiar to you.
the 2 "snowboarding" the toboggons may be in the annual
here is a picture of the high school band in 31
I suspect the younger kids may have been schooled in the same area. I seem to recall a couple of the old buildings to the East of the elks may have been used as school rooms at one time I had a few aunts that should be in that group but don't see them there. Knowing what I do about them the one leading the band would have been Ellan but I don't have any of her that young Youngest I have they were teenagers.
i'll find it and compare. are there names connect to the pictures?
what does it say on the blackboard? we need higher res

one thing BB never had was burma shave adds. used to see them on what passed as interstates.

Re: Old Photos
Ridelikethewind, Sun Feb 03 2008, 02:07PM

Dennis- on your set of three the bottom cabin looks like an old one that was out off Mitchell near where Meadow Brook is now. It was behind someone's house and was in tact until about 2 years ago when a tree fell on it. It stayed that way for awhile and I was hopeful they would repair it. They didn't. I rode by there this summer and they'd pulled it down and hauled it away. Very sad. It was a good sized cabin and in good shape until the tree mishap.

there were lots of gas stations on the hill plus many individuals had them, and most tanks are still in the ground many in roads.

then back up the street to get that angle.

a few steps back a picture, a few more another, a few more another, then all the way to the corner for the last.
then a few years in the future to the original spot.
while I was back there I figured I go a lttle more forward and caught my dad coming out of pardee's. That is him in the yellow pendelton, with the cigarette in his mouth. Doug johnson is over at the union station gassing up his power wagon he used to cut firewood.
i was probably there installing chains

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Fri Feb 08 2008, 04:15PM

radha
before my time. plus the resolution is poor on the post.. I will bet the ones with ties wern't locals.
the bartlets had two store locations I think one was near chad's and the other was across the street in the middle of the block
not sure which yours is. it may be the one in the top picture. There has always been so many changes it is hard to tell where things were. in a lot of pictures I can place them only from one store or building that is familiar. chads, beards, and navajo are about the only three that never seemed to change
the three here are from town in the top one the restaurant is in the area of one of Bartlets places. the second one there store is on the right.
the third I was never really sure where it was untill I saw the one you posted of McNeal's and saw the old transformer in the telephone pole. you can see it in this picture. The store in this one looks exactly like the boulder bay store did as I remember it. (by the way, another gas station, and tank).
the Bartlets were brothers and at one time owned indian lodge, and where paramont lodge was (chamber office).
they also built Cedar lake.
Town being known as Pine Knot is realitivly new. for a long time it was known to locals as bartlet.
This is about all I know of them. I have no idea of what happened to them or if they have family in the area.

Re: Old Photos
Hooky Bobber, Mon Feb 11 2008, 07:55AM

I was looking at a Subdivision map and see that the Knights Camp Tract goes from the boulevard south to Pennsylvania and Oak. Then form Jefferies to Knickerbocker east too west. I would guess that a few of the old buildings in the Knight Camp Photo are still around in the old lodges and in side streets. The photo is funny you can see Eagle Point in it from all the trees being gone south of the highway. To me it looks like the photo is taken about half way up Knight St. The people in Pineknot must of not wanted to go far in the wagon to get firewood and building materials. I was also wondering if the area was called Knights camp and some of the buildings in the photo are other lodges and cabins. Like the areas we call Boulder Bay, Mill Creek, Skunk Hallow, Red Ant Hill, Lagunita, Pineknot, China Gardens, Moonridge and so on?
Radha and Bill great stuff.
I pulled this out of a book on the Internet and it shows a lot of the lodges in the valley. Do any of you have any old Maps of the valley with lodges and stuff?

Ya know what?? I propose that Blakey and all the supporting members of SCM produce a book containing all these images and this information. Some of these pictures and stories are history and should be preserved.

Maybe we should all contribute to the SCM Big Bear Historical Association whereas we store all of this historcal information on servers for the future?? With the costs of drive space, it would be easy to archive it and possibly docoument it on SCM.

You guys are great!!!

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Fri Feb 15 2008, 09:49PM

Bmatheny

trouble is while most of the photo's are public domain, some are still under copyright.
and most is not high enough resolution for print purpose.
I know at least one member uses the inages and info in a business, and another hopes too.
They are loaned to the site and can be downloaded and some is stored in the old photo's section and on the threads. I would imagine some of this great stuff would dry up if this is pursued.
I suggest we all just use and enjoy it, I am learning quite a bit and would hate to see it stop.

Re: Old Photos
Bmatheny, Sat Feb 16 2008, 08:05AM

You are right Dennis. I don't want this to stop either. I was just thinking how important some of this stuff is to people like me that don't know the detailed history of BB. Thanks again all.

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Sat Feb 16 2008, 09:09AM

start a file on your computer and down load,
verify everything you can.
the more places some of this stuff is the better.
also post what you come across there are lots of family photo's out there that show great stuff.
It's to bad we have to rely so much on post cards and a few great photographers
Encourage the museum to get their stuff online. There is a lot that has been donated that is sitiing fading and can easily be lost if it is not spread around. A lot is just pictures that nobody will be able to explain as people that remember die.
I have tons of stuff I would like to ask my parents and their fiends.
You would have to be 70 years old to have even met my grandfather or any from his era. I can just barely remember him and had no idea what a treasure he had in his head.
there are still a few old famalies up there and if you can offer to scan their stuff and get them to write on their families involvement in the valley. all are important threads in the swatch of cloth called Big Bear.
Start your own journal, and take pictures. It wont be long before today becomes tomorrows history.
My stuff is as I remember it. and I will never Lie (I may b.s. from time to time but you will know it)
but everyone makes mistakes and sometimes see things differently Don't rely on one source or entirely trust anything.
the stuff like the stuff rahda has posted is just brocures, and stuff from the 50's and 60's who keeps that stuff?
how great would it be if all the old grizzly's and limelighters were online. But I understand they don't even have copies of old stuff, not sure about photo's.
I wish that the one Radha just posted on the horses at stillwells could talk
A club online would be interesting but not sure how it would work.better then just everyone posting everything they can.
one thing I tried to do, a little late was take pictures before things were torn down, or built. With the great camera's and free film there is no excuse not to have everything saved

You can see the old dam in the bottom left of this photo.

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Sat Feb 16 2008, 09:34AM

I think this is the rock near China Island.

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Sat Feb 16 2008, 10:13AM

rahda yes that was taken from what they call kid cove.
the one of the dam took some work to take. The highway ended just past grey's just out of sight of this picture untill they finished the artic circle and put the bridge across the dam. It also ended about Boulder bay except for a narrow wagon road that led about half way to the dam. My grandfather told my mother that there was a rock that had a groove cut in it that was cut by the hubs of his wagon wheel because the trail was so narrow. I think he had to carry or use a boat to get to the dam keepers cabin.
The market and Fawnskin itself havent changed a lot just aged. I think that is how they like it. Can't blame them a bit.
I was sitting in a car about where the gold pan when I was young just before dark and it was so quiet and peaceful.... untill the fire horn went off.

BBB
the trees were removed in the late 60's? when the lake was very low. there are still some within about a mile of the dam that were still covered and a few small ones in coves

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Sat Feb 16 2008, 10:57AM

Speaking of trees in the lake...this image is from a postcard sent in 1919. The reverse side says, "Big Bear Lake, Cal. This is where I am spending my vacation and having a wonderful time. We are way up in the mountains. Expect to stay two weeks. Have a dandy little cabin. Will send you some pictures when I get home. Went to the dance last night and are going on a big hike tomorrow. Wish you were here." Neta Heiser

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Sat Feb 16 2008, 11:41AM

This is fun, it is from a postcard mailed to another radio station in Grangeville, Idaho in 1955.

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Sat Feb 16 2008, 12:26PM

that is A QSL card sent by amatuer radio operators to confirm contact. hams covet these.
Didn't know fred was a ham intill I saw that.
Fred owned Fred's sporting goods. Sat kitty corner to halls in some of the postcards. he later moved to where skyline sports is down the street. Very nice guy sold me my first probably 6 guns came in at night to get me some shells and a license when I waited to long before a hunting trip.
moved off the hill and had several sporting good stores. Sadly I think he is gone.

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Sat Feb 16 2008, 01:05PM

Speaking of old timers... check out the size of the claws

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Sat Feb 16 2008, 01:15PM

This cabin photo is of Bluff Lake. Dennis, is Bluff Lake the same as Cedar Lake? If yes, why was it changed?

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Sat Feb 16 2008, 01:36PM

I have seen that several times and wonder if it is a Grizzly, and if it was really bear valley. The last one I heard about was killed in the early 20's but not in Big Bear. it's a shame they are gone.
Radha, those arn't claws, these are
if not by size, at least proximity. Funny thing was I expected teeth
Bluff lake is several miles further up the road from Cedar Lake it is near the champion lodge pole pine. by far the biggest tree in the area now.
. The trees in that picture are enormous
Bluff lake is now owned by I believe Natures Conservency. Used to be a neat scout camp. Was used in parent trap any many other movies, as was Cedar Lake. Those cabins were about 1/4 mile from the turn off from skyline drive (sorry I don't know the numbers) spent about 4 hours there one night stuck in snow in a corvair with at least 1,000 coyotes howling in the meadow, well maybe it was just 4 or 5

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Sat Feb 16 2008, 01:55PM

This is a great cabin from Bartlett's camp, is that at Cedar Lake?

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Sat Feb 16 2008, 06:39PM

I'm not sure of the date on this one, but the label says Bear Valley.

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Sat Feb 16 2008, 06:45PM

Another Bear Valley Photo.

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Sat Feb 16 2008, 07:18PM

This photo looks like the airport area, from Big Bear City. Notice the cows grazing.

Re: Old Photos
Around The Lake, Sat Feb 16 2008, 08:09PM

Sorry but Bluff Lake "was" owned by the YMCA not the scout's for over 55years great spot in our mountains

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Sat Feb 16 2008, 08:21PM

your right, probably a freuidian slip since I would be scouting girls, never saw Haley Mills though.
Do they have groups at Bluff lake anymore?
They had a bear come in the roof of a cabin one winter and tore the place apart trying to get out. Not sure if he died, but I'm not sure they could clean it up. I think it was in there a long time.

and do you know who owned the mill creek boys camp, near camp Osioi?
I think it was called habonin? rottien spelling

Re: Old Photos

This is an aerial photo of the Big Bear Landing Strip from 1932. Click to enlarge, I posted a good size file so you can see the details.

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Sun Feb 17 2008, 04:21PM

Enlarge this image and enjoy a view of what is labeled "Baldwin Lake." I think it's the Shay Meadow area. This came with some items from around 1925-1927.

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Sun Feb 17 2008, 04:29PM

This map is from the same group of materials. It is part of a sales brochure from Big Bear Land and Water Co. "Building Big Bear City, Kiener Realty Co., of Los Angeles. Enlarge the image to see the details.

This is the receipts the Land & Water Company used to give out. Note the date.

Re: Old Photos

This photo was taken by Grinnel, a man who hiked and camped in this area studying the local biology in 1907. This photo shows the old dam.

Re: Old Photos

Who remembers Festus from Gunsmoke (Ken Curtis)? This is a picture of him when he was a lot younger and Grand Marshall of the Big Bear Rodeo.

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Sat Feb 23 2008, 03:41PM

This picture of White Dove, is from the same booklet. The booklet is a souvenir program from the First Annual Big Bear - Fawnskin Rodeo, June 22nd. Does anyone have an idea of what year that might have been?

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Mon Feb 25 2008, 04:45PM

Remember Stillwell's? This is a winter time image of some of the cabins.

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Mon Feb 25 2008, 06:10PM

Here are a couple of photos of Fawnskin. The first one is a nice shot of the Fawn Lodge (1945) on the left and a soda fountain on the right. The second one shows Wilson's Market.

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Mon Feb 25 2008, 06:26PM

This old postcard is dated 1933 and was sent by Bert to Redondo Beach. In it he says, "Arrived about 10:00 AM. Got everything up to the cabin then it started to hail. It's snowing now. Plenty fire- not cold."

The image shows the snow covered Pioneer Store in Fawnskin and is a Pederson photo. I left the image large, so if you click on it, you can read the sign.

Re: Old Photos

The pictures and post cards are so cool! Thank you for always sharing them with us!

Re: Old Photos
Hooky Bobber, Tue Feb 26 2008, 07:41AM

On the south side on the Fawnskin market they had a movie like facade of a jail in the 60s where the union ice is in the photo. People would go behind and snap photos in the jail. I think the photo of the pioneer store is the current moose lodge. The photos are great to see. White Dove Trading Post was around for decades at Thrush and the Blvd.

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Tue Feb 26 2008, 08:42AM

Thanks for the details Jerry. I have a lot of old photos, but still have a lot to learn. This is the fun of taking the time to post images on SoCalMtns, the feedback is as enjoyable as the photos.

Re: Old Photos

I'm not sure BBB, but I would think so. I have a bunch of photos of the old lodges. Here are a couple of pictures from Holloway's.

Re: Old Photos

You might want to get with Chucl Lawrence (Oak Knoll) as his family has owned that lodge for over 80 years or more. I know he has a lot of pics.

Re: Old Photos
Benny ⭐, Fri Mar 21 2008, 05:40PM

Those are great Radha, ove the pic of Baldwin lake being the same size as big bear lake, and that very safe looking aircraft they all flew up in!

Re: Old Photos
SrRaceFan, Sat Mar 22 2008, 06:42AM

I remember staying at Holloway's when I was a kid. (When Grandpa was in residence at his cabin, we always went to Holloway's.) Although the places were very small, that wasn't my complaint. I hated the fact that the sun shone in through the chinks in the walls! To me, that meant that spiders and all sorts of creepies could wiggle in through the holes. Great pictures, Radha - keep 'em comin'!!

Here's an old picture of the Golf Course.

Re: Old Photos

I think this cabin is still up on the hill behind Gray's Camp.

Camping at the Lake!

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Wed Mar 26 2008, 08:52AM

I'm not sure of the date on this one. By it's age, I would say 1920's.

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Wed Mar 26 2008, 08:56AM

It's time to go camping! This image is Lemke's campground.

Re: Old Photos
Radha, Wed Mar 26 2008, 08:59AM

This image is of the Lighthouse Camp. I believe there are still parts of it on the North Shore near the Solar Observatory. There appears to be a store and a place to park your RV.

Re: Old Photos
KK, Wed Mar 26 2008, 09:53AM

Yes you are right! The old store is still there. The owneres of the Lighthouse marina just redid it last year. Everything was restored back to it's origional state. There family has owned the marina for many years.

This is were we dock our boat.

Re: Old Photos
Hooky Bobber, Wed Mar 26 2008, 06:44PM

I think the camping at the lake photo is Grout Bay looking east and the one you think is around 1920 is around Moon Camp looking west. The one of the golf course is hard place. I think it is looking west at Delmar Mt and Grays Peak but who knows how far east. It could be from Paradise in Bear City to the lake bottom west of the airport AKA Baker Pond. Long before my time and I am just guessing on all of them. They are great photos. Love the collection you have. A real nice window of the past and a time gone by thanks Radha..

Re: Old Photos

it was always called the skyroom if you look on the ceiling there is a disco ball and with the curved ceiling I imagine it looked like stars whirling around as you danced.
There was stillwels marina, and the skyroom. Don't know where the other name came from on the postcard.

Re: Old Photos
Around The Lake, Thu Jun 12 2008, 08:04PM

yes that looks like the camp the fireplace was at camp whittle and was the old dining hall but it burned in the 80's but the building was not burned just the firepace as a group built to large of a fire in it. one of the building in the photos burned in the fire last year.

It was a private husband wife run camp that took 20-25 boys at a time for 2 week sessions from the middle of june to the middle of sept. they were in business from the early 1940s till the early 1950s. I have no idea why they closed. BSF

Re: Old Photos
BSF, Sat Jun 14 2008, 09:02PM

Rodaha: The PO in the background looks like the BBL post office, if it is the double doors on the right are for the old bank. I believe it was the United Calif. Bank, The bank changed names several times from the time opened till it closed after moving to a new location where the I Hop sets today. I will go by that location tomorrow & look at the ridge line across the lake. In the pick. the ridge behind the PO looks to close to be across the lake. if it is the PO the cabin with the californian Would be setting where Notinghams resturant is today. I don't remember any bldgs being on that corner till Cris Barnette Built the Sunset & snow motel & the Robinhood resturant in the mid fifties. but my memory fails me sometimes. BSF

Hey I remember that building. Wasn't it where that almost park is at not west of the current post office?

Re: Old Photos
BSF, Sun Jun 15 2008, 11:20PM

Went by an took a couple of pics. of the ridge in background. no need to match them the second pic. conferms it is BBL Po.
I am not sure when J.B.Quail became president of this bank or exactly when he left. What I can tell you about him is he did more to help the residents of this valley than any other resident of that era. He trusted almost everyone even me. I was under age & no one to co sign for a loan of a couple hundred bucks. That doesn't seem like much today, spent that much takin my familily to lunch today. Back in those days that was a months wages, an money was hard to come by. but thats the way JB was, thats what everybody called him. If a person had a legitimate problem that money would solve, JB did everything within his control to help solve the problem. one time the boy scouts needed funds to send the kids to the jamboree, JB loaned each of the boys $50 bucks to go if they promised to pay him back. & I believe they all did over time & time it took considering a good wage for a kid at that time was .50-.75 cents an hour. BSF

Re: Old Photos

This is a fantastic old map showing three roads to Big Bear. There's the back road from Barstow, past Cushenberry Ranch. You can also see the route from Redlands up Clarke's Grade. The Last road comes up to Fredalba and the I think it goes through Green Valley and Snowslide Road to Fawnskin.

I'm not sure of the age of the map, but it's prior to changing the name of Little Bear Lake to Lake Arrowhead.

The map was on a flyer distributed by the Peck Judah Company. They were located in Los Angeles and arranged tours. I think they worked with the Mountain Auto line to bring people up here.

Click on the map and enlarge it!

Re: Old Photos

mike the post office/bank as just west of the current post office you can see the marina at the right edge of the picture, the post office would block it now. I got kicked out of the post office for "life" when I was about 10. how many people can claim getting 86'd from a P.O.?
used to shoot dove in the lake bed right behind the bank, that wasen't why I got kicked out, that was leagle
Bob Freeman had his studio in one of the offices on the lower floor on the other side of the building.
when they tore down the building the vault was left for quite awhile as it was built so strong.

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Tue Jul 22 2008, 07:05AM

radha
very cool pictures love the family at the cabin hard to believe the boy is around 85 now.
the map is old enough the artic circle isn't shown. the snow slide and clarkes grade section were part of the old rim of the world highway. I think the waterman canyon section and not city creek was a part of it also. Arrowhead was called little bear pretty long and it is still refered to as that by some people. You probably have info on when the name change was made.

Actually this is similar to the setup that butler peak used to have, plus a tool with insulaters on the feet for lightening storms

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Mon Sep 08 2008, 01:35PM

I thought I had posted these, maybe they are somewhere else.
When my parents first got married they were assigned to Butler peak as lookouts. Probably around 1940 My mom said they spent their honeymoon there.
Mentioned seeing a condor soaring over the canyon for hours.
it was so clear back then that there was seldom a day they couldn't see catalina, or into Mexico.
the second shows the artic circle in it's old narrow 2 lane days

I don't know why there wasn't more intrest in the belleville area
If anyone has any please post them.
I am also still looking for any of the sugar shack,

great finds as usual.
can't place the alpine one. Are you sure it is Big Bear.
looks like it should face the lake with all that glass
but it looks like the reflections shows trees. Can you make out anything in your copy?
the door to the right might give a lot of info
I wonder if it could be the first stillwells?
maybe BSF will remember it

Bill's Grandson

I'll email a larger copy to you. It was part of a group of images I purchased, that was labeled Big Bear Lake. Let us know what you think.

The image of Pine Knot Lodge is really exciting. I haven't seen one that close up. It was mislabeled as a picture from New York, I think because of the post mark. I would have had to pay twice as much had it been labeled correctly!

great pictures Jerry glad to see this thread moving again.
I think the pine knot lodge is the same one that is in the picture Radha posted. If you look at hers the porch wraps around and might be the angle in your photo, as long as the angle hides the chimney.
I had never seen that the porch wrapped like that
I wonder if it did it on the third side too?

I really like your quote under the pictures

Dennis this is about how I remember the lay out between Main and Knickerbocker and south of Foothill

I think this [Click Here] is taken looking southeast in the morning. The building to the right side of the lodge in the background I think is around the corner of School and Marin. Dam it seems a long time ago.

Ok then this [Click Here] would have been taken looking to the southwest and I think you are right Bills Grandson it is the same building. It could be taken from the front deck of the building I seem to recall was called the bunkhouse.

The small cabins shown here
[Click Here] look just like the ones that ran in a row and close to gather on a diagonal from about behind Halls Chicken / The Hot Spot on flat ground towards the other big building that I think they called it the bunkhouse

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Fri Dec 12 2008, 01:05PM

Some of the cabins were there long after the main building was gone, and they looked about the same, a few boards missing here and there. There were 2 or three east of the main building on the lakeside. Can't remember if there were any to the West, but there were a couple across from the office also. I remember the ones to the east because we were chasing a friend around the lake and he went off the road and almost hit one.

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Wed Dec 31 2008, 01:07PM

you got me stumped

can't believe I said that. Wait untill BSF gets a chance to see it. If I were to have to guess I might say one that it was one at the corner of north shore and greenway.
The cement wall under the plank being cut looks like one that used to be there. Also the mountain in the background would fit. Shadow would be O.K. to for that place and angle.
hope someone can tie it down. I look at the people and try to ID them. of course they all look like my grandfather so I can't be much help there. his hat doesn't look like any I have seen him wear The plank if not cut down more would be the size of some used for panneling in the mansion, and are similar to some that used to be in the basement with bark removed.

after looking closer I don't remember seeing the notches in the concrete that are there to hold the rollers. it also looks like that could be made out of wood. I think the concrete might still be there and could be checked. It is on the SE corner.
take a look at the guys in this picture with my mom at lynn lift. The heavyset guy is Clifford Lynn ( who had at least one sawmill. Jim Knight is also there and looks like the guy on the left side of the picture.
I will forward everything to BSF who might have a better idea

Re: Old Photos
Hooky Bobber, Sat Jan 03 2009, 04:59PM

I only know of them on Division on each side of the highway. The bears were moved for the turn lanes on the highway and are in the yard at Twin Bear Rentals along the fencing.

So form left to right the 6th. person in the front row is Beatrice Pedder. I only know this because I have a book called Big Bear Panorama. They made the kids walk to the camera store it looks like. The school would have been where the Elks Lodge is and the photo store was across from trading post. Dennis will know for sure. 20 kids and looks to be only 7 girls.

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Sat Jan 03 2009, 06:45PM

I have both those pictures in the 1932 evergreen.
it is the enire high school student body. The guy on the right is T.W. Griffen who was 1/3 of the faculty and principal.
They still held classes at both the upstairs of Beards (McNeal's) and the Elks but I think they were moving to the Elks club that year. at that time
My dad is on the back row left side with the white windbreaker
.
They have some great pictures in the annuals of the activities and candid photo's
The first picture is a close up of Bea peader who was a early historian while in school, and collected many of the myths and legends'
the bottom picture is the band led by J.B coughran another 1/3 of the faculty
the last is my dad. He looks like he was onery even then

As far as I know the Bears were always there, and pan blowing his flute was at the clubhouse. It was very dangerous pulling out onto the highway. I wish they had replaced them there after they removed the stones. They are both in the rental yard at this time.
it was quite common to drive by and see someone had dressed them up.

Re: Old Photos

Cat
If I remember right from an earlier talk that you stayed both at Paramont lodge and the cabins to the west of them. Paramont was always those flimsy little cabins with the small porches. Aparently there were log cabins there earlier.
do you know anything about the history of that area? I thought the ones that were close to Chads were theirs (Chads) Paramont was seperate, and then Beaver cabins which I remember as being log.
There were also some that sat SW of beaver cabins that may have been part of Chad's. Do you have any information on any of this?
I remember the lodge at Paramont was very cheesy built. I was in it when John Wayne was but never saw him. I had a friend who lived in one of the cabins for a long time, and it never seemed like more then one room, there must have been a bathroom, and maybe a kitchenet in the back. but the walls seemed paper thin

Re: Old Photos
, Sat Jan 10 2009, 04:38PM

BG I never stayed at the Paramont lodge. I stayed at the Beaver cabins. Thats the picture at the top of the page. I do not know the history. All I know is after years of standing they were in bad shape and junkie. Yes they had a porch one bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. They were dumps. You could see between the logs outside. Who was your friend?

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Sat Jan 10 2009, 04:45PM

I always thought the beaver cabins were nice. They kept the frounds up.
but I never went in them.
His name was Ted can't think of his last name. but I'm sure it would have been before your time it was probably late 50's. He was in a paramont cabin almost directly across the alley from the lodge.

good detective work. They used the same area for a lot of the old Sgt Preston shows and lots of shows with mounties in them. The building was often a trading post and they would leave by canoe and travel thee days and land across the lake. Los of good shows that you never see anymore.

"Steamboat on Cedar Lake" Was used in the film Heart of the north and filmed at Cedar Lake in 1938 it required the construction of a steamboat at Cedar Lake. The Steamboat was used in at least two other pictures, The man from Montreal (1940) and the Queen of the Yukon (1940), Eventually it was dismantled and taken to Hollywood.

Here are a couple of pictures of the area

The first is of the theater as it was in the 60's This is the second on the site. Both burned down. The arcade that is now on the site I believe also had a fire.
There were a lot of fires.

The second shows the old safeway. It is over the white car heading down the highway. You can also see the old theater just beyond it

Re: Old Photos
SrRaceFan, Wed Sep 26 2012, 12:25PM

The "old" Safeway is the one I remember, especially the tiles on the lower half of the storefront and the nice little ledge for parking youngster's butts on.

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Wed Sep 26 2012, 01:19PM

I can only remember being in it a couple of times.
Once during a field trip in about fifth grade. It seemed so modern and clean. We walked both ways from the school and had a great time.
Andy Denos was our guide in the store. He later managed the new store. I don't remember seeing him in the one at interlaken.
Next to the old Safeway was a cornet five and dime store. Those two stores were the first chain stores in the valley. Since Earl Streebe owned several other theaters you could probably add that also
We always did our shoping at Reed's marked which was next to McNeals. I remember getting free dog bones from Frank in the Butcher area. Usually about five pounds worth. Our dog would gnaw on them for weeks while they kept getting dirtier

Re: Old Photos

I appreciate the help everyone. I'm trying to gather as much info and material on the Palace/Superbear to do a write up on the history of the place. I loved visiting the Superbear as a kid and I think it would be a real shame if it never re-opens or is drastically altered. So any memories or related stories are greatly appreciated. I'll keep the forum aprised of my progress with te project.

Do you think the San Bernardino paper would have ever done an article on the place? Any know archive of the Big Bear paper? I'm sure they had do some sort of advertising or promotion in the local community.

Re: Old Photos
bills grandson, Thu Sep 27 2012, 12:20PM

While arcades have had a very long run I am afraid most will be gone.
The rising cost of everything and the fact you can get as good of games at home will kill them off.
I don't remember ever seeing a story on the arcades. They were always popular with the tourists, and the palace was probably the favorite for them.
There were at least five in the two streets of the village over the years.

my friends haircut incident would have been around 1967

I 100% agree with you Bill's Grandson. Most traditional arcades have already been closed down for 15+ years. I think that the Superbear was able to hold on for so long due to its unique prime location in the village, the owner's committment to opening the doors and keeping the kids in line, and Big Bear's seasonal tourism.

Home game consoles like the Playstation and xbox 360 have pretty much put the final nail in the coffin for the stand alone arcade. Still, there are some Bar/Arcades that do pretty well (Dave & Busters, GameWorks, etc.) That being said, I think that the Superbear could still do well. It has such a long history in the area that it has become a tradition for many families to stop in and play skeeball or the arcade games. Allan the former long-time owner told me a stoy of a time when 4 generations of women were playing skeeball together on 4 lanes (Great Grandma, Grandma, Mom, and Daughter).

My fear is that the current owner is looking to sell off the location and has no real interest in keeping it an arcade. That's why I'm trying to dig up all the history of the place to preserve the story of the Superbear, in the event that it never opens again.

Fire department responded to a call there last weekend. Don't know how it worked out. Seems to be a lot of fires on that spot for some unknown reason. Hope they keep their insurance up
I think you would have to invest a lot to keep an arcade going now. With lazer tag, and other things to keep young people coming in

Thanks ©ammy I figured since I didn't hear more it was not bad.
I have been trying to remember the last one they had. I think it was in the back area and was not real big. They also had at least one break in.
Haven't been in there in years. If they still have skee ball they would be in the back. I would think they would draw some tourists if there were some in the front. In the palace they were busy, but the tickets and giving out prizes might be labor intensive

Yikes! I better find a way to get inside the Super Bear and photo document everything before the place goes up in smoke!
