BIG BEAR CITY RESIDENTS REPORTED A MAN WITH A GUN, SHOOTING INTO TREES

Residents reported a man with a gun shooting into trees. Deputies found the man with a BB gun shooting at squirrels

DATE/TIME: August 11, 2020 3:58 p.m.

INCIDENT: Ring Video Captures Images of Male Subject Shooting Into Trees

LOCATION: 300 Block S. Brewer Way, Big Bear City

SUSPECT: 45-year-old male, resident of Valley Village, CA

SUMMARY:
Shortly before 4:00 p.m. on August 11, 2020, deputies from the Big Bear Sheriff's Station responded to a report of a Ring video that captured what appeared to be an armed male subject walking around the back yard of the residence, shooting into trees. Multiple patrol units responded to the house in the 300 block of S. Brewer Way in Big Bear City and conducted extensive area checks. At that time, no subjects matching the description of the male in the video were located.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., information was received from an employee of a local rental management company who saw the video on social media and the male subject was recognized as a tenant who was currently renting a cabin in the same neighborhood where the Ring video was captured. Based on community assistance and social media, deputies were able to make contact with the man at the rental cabin. Deputies determined the male subject used a BB gun to shoot at squirrels from the reporting party's property. The replica handgun was seized and a report was prepared for review by the District Attorney's Office to determine if criminal charges will be filed against the male.

The Big Bear Sheriff's Station appreciates the diligence and cooperation of local residents to keep our community safe.

Can you shoot squirrels with a slingshot?
Can you shoot peanuts at squirrels with a slingshot?
Can you throw rocks at squirrels?
Can you throw peanuts at squirrels?

Actually I only have chipmunks and we play hide and seek with the peanuts (unsalted of course).

is it illegal to kill varmints in big bear? not saying that the squirrels the guy was trying to hit were pests, but is there a legal difference to killing rats in my backyard with a pellet gun, and squirrels? Is that why Sherrifs confiscated his pellet gun? or was the pellet gun confiscated without backup of an ordinance or law regarding use of a pellet gun on a residential neighborhood?

back in Montana, the local county paid bounty on muskrats.

This last month squirrels got into our food supplies, chewing through the storage containers and ruined $400 or so of supplies. Would some here call me a "disrespectful piece of $#!+" if I killed those vermin? Just want to know, so I don't get in trouble with some ordinance up here that I have not heard about, or labelled a squirrel hater.

Besides the fact that I can't un-see those pictures of him (lovely) is that he was a renter (short term? Long term? Not clear), not on his own property and likely just shooting into the trees hoping to randomly hit something.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to do that in someone else's backyard. Pest control in your own yard is probably different and even a pellet gun can be illegal in certain circumstances (heck, even a toy gun if you modify it to look like a real one). I'd check that one with the sheriff.

Props to the rental management company for narc'ing on their own tenant. It was the responsible thing to do and demonstrates a care for their community.

Exactly! You can shoot a BB or Pellet gun in YOUR OWN backyard, but not cool to be doing it in your neighbor's yard, especially being a weekend rental. If someone wandered into my yard with what appeared to be a weapon, it probably wouldn't end well for them.

The grey squirrels have only recently come back from the mange that spread.

Yeah, that's what I'm sayin..... they're finally repopulating and some numb-nut is shooting them. At least go for the gophers.
