Moths?
Juliann, Mon May 25 2020, 06:48AM

Have heard quite a few neighbors’ fire alarms going off in the evening the last two weekends. Their house managers have even come to turn them off. I have been warned about the smoke setting off the alarms. But there is no smoke smell up here so I have to assume it is the moths. It finally happened to us last night and one moth did drop out of one as husband was disconnecting it. We have certainly never had this happen before. Ended up having to totally disconnect a couple because it happened again and again. Replacing battery didn’t help. Soooo.... happening to anyone here?

Yep, just crazy. You've not had an alarm set off? I'm now aware that it's not just smoke alarms, it's security alarms, also, that are set off. But the security alarm can be set differently, so that a moving moth or 10 won't set if off.... But mine is a smoke alarm. Two of them had a moth IN it. : (

We have them too in Moonridge! Haven't seen them before. There were a bunch under the cover of my grill, but in the house too. We don't live here full time, actually hadn't been up since February.

we have a place in Moonridge. owned it for 27 years and have never had a moth problem.
just came up for a few days and found probably 50 - all hanging onto our drapes in upper area of cabin
i think i was able to kill them all
i know we did not bring them in and i cannot find any entry opening.
does anyone know best way to eliminate? or do they just go away on their own ??

Amazing you have not experienced them before, we had them in large numbers a couple of different spring times/June, but 10 years ago. I hear some people are leaving a bowl of soapy water and catching a lot that way. Some people are setting off Something when they’re leaving that will kill them after they’re gone. Yeah, they eventually die off and stop somehow getting into our houses. Hope that happens soon!

Re: Moths?
bman, Mon May 25 2020, 12:03PM

thanks for suggestion - we'll try the soapy water if they are still there when we come back up in a few weeks. hopefully they are gone

I have honestly killed ar least 300 of them using the light and soapy water bowl under the light.!

My numbers are finally diminishing. Last night set this trap.
1. Dollar Store basket with open grid so I could plug in nightlight through it.
2. Cardboard paint bucket w Blue Dawn soapy water
3. Built up pedestal to keep basket even with nitelite. Pedestal = lg Quaker Oats tube + 2 local phone books

You flattened the curve!!!

Nature, Mon May 25 2020, 06:33PM

We had a bird in our open garage today picking off moths. Last evening there was a blue jay eating them at our open slider upstairs. I open up windows my husband took the screens off of and they exit as soon as we start to loose light in the rooms they are in. It’s all inside the addition portion. My two cats take care of any that might stray into the occupied portion of our home. My male cat goes into the addition and has a field day catching and playing with them. He is a genuine hunter except there isn’t much “hunting” to do with hundreds of moths. I kept the garage closed to him. They are indoor cats only unless in a harness and on a long retractable leash. The moths die out indoors too.
Sometimes I put a bright light outside one of our open sliders upstairs. It helps. Whatever it takes to get them to leave.

HazMatMind, Mon May 25 2020, 07:55PM

Wish I had flattened the curve (with the bucket trapz) before RAGE SMASHING all those moths against the walls where they left moth smudge balls.

looks like those who are succeeding are using the light and bucket approach.
but has anyone figured out how to stop them from multiplying? someway to find and kill the egg source?

I have noticed there have been a lot of ladybugs around as of late. I would gladly trade you ladybugs for moths. The weird part is, I have hardly seen any moths out here in Shay Meadow(s), and my pet tiger loves to chase them and eat them!

Still trapping hundreds of moths every night! And yes, the fly hatch has started! It has been 3 years since we had had such a huge swarm of all the bugs, lady bugs included! It’s crazy!

Re: Moths?
Neesie, Thu May 28 2020, 12:46PM

Just had a thought. If anyone is going out trout fishing and needs some flys I’ve now got a shop vac full!!! Lol!

Re: Moths?

Still getting 1 or 2 yellow jackets in the house daily.
Moths have dwindled and there's less flys than a week ago.
Maybe there is light at the end...
Almost ready for winter again.

Nurseelsa, Sun May 31 2020, 09:10AM

My house in Fawnskin was loaded with moths last night. Already killed 10 this morning. My insert in fireplace is full of them with door locked tight. I will try the soapy dish method tonight to lure them downstairs so I can relax in my bedroom. Lived here 20 years and never had this kind of moth invasion.

Re: Moths?
KK, Mon Jun 01 2020, 08:15AM

Fireplaces are full of them, So are our heating ducts! Closed and locked everything, then sucked them all up. Still had hundreds last night. Called Terminx, they will be here this afternoon. The soapy water does work but still have so many. I’m so done with them!

Re: Moths?
Deb Doodah, Mon Jun 01 2020, 07:13PM

I got to the cabin yesterday and quickly vacuumed up the dead moths. I thought I had missed out on the invasion. Boy was I wrong! Got up this morning, turned on the kitchen light and thought I was in a re-enactment of the birds. I couldn’t grab the vacuum fast enough. The vacuum is now staying out and plugged in at the ready. 😀😀😀😀

Hi! Unfortunately Terminex could not help us. We have dogs and cats and could leave our home for a couple of days while they bomb the house. It was suggested that we keep using the light and soapy water method. No lights on at night, only those over the bowls. The buggers can hide everywhere during the day. Go room by room and vacuum as many live ones as you can. Cedar oil is also recommended as a deterrent. The numbers do seem to be getting less.
Unfortunately we are moving onto the nuisance fly hatch. Using zappers and fly traps for them. Been in BB almost 22 years and this has been the worst I have seen for bugs. This too shall pass!

Re: Moths?
KK, Sun Jun 21 2020, 12:39PM

So, how is everyone’s Moths doing? We were able to get the numbers way down. I slacked off with the upkeep of lights and bowls. We are now back to having at least 100 each night. I guess it only takes two to keep breeding. Do I have to wait until winter for them to die off?

Not sure if they will keep their families growing
When does moth season end ??
