Re: All stuff about Big Bear north

It snowed again here yesterday. Got about 1 1/2 inches. My kids tried to build a snowman but they couldn't work well together and all the got done was a pile of snow. But my daughter was able to make a good snow angel.
Oh and its cold up here. It's 11 degrees this morning.

All of you SCM people who have moved to Idaho: Where did you land in ID and why that area? I have some family that has left southern Calif for ID in retirement; they like to fish and hunt (I do neither), and while I enjoy the outdoors/walking/hiking I'm not completely sold for some reason. Although it does sound more economical than California!

As well you should be. It is a horrible God forsaken place. The winters are long and harsh followed by what can only be described as deep mud season and then straight into fire season. If you are lucky enough to have a clear non-choking and barely breathing day during fire season at least that day you can actually see the wasps that have been biting and stinging you since mud season. That is followed by the rainy season or as it is affectionately called in other parts of the country as fall. It is pretty at this time, but that is open burning season so you just get more of the same breath choking smoke.
You don’t want me to even get started on the people or the driving habits by "those people" in their Subaru's. I suggest you stay away, it is just simply horrible up here.

Ten months out of the year look like this

The rest is pretty much what was already described but they forgot the inversion that keeps temperatures sub freezing with no sun for weeks on end leaving the roads undriveable except for those previous mentioned Subaru "people".

Best to stay in CA.

My parents live in Boise and they will confirm that all 40,000 moved in down the street and are causing traffic jams and housing prices to go through the roof. Oh and they are turning Boise into a little LA.

I laugh because we were California transplants but that was almost 40 years ago so it doesn’t count.

I don’t know what all the fuss is about. They love Californians up here. Every single time I drive down the road I’m waved at, usually by woman and children . They even have their own special way of waving, generally involves just one finger on both hands. It is so cute.

Might I suggest Montana.

I just brought a mint preserved 1989 4x4 suburban down fron Eagle iD. Beautiful country, but my relatives there say that the exodus of freedom minded people are driving housing prices through the roof, and that causes a lot of hate and resentment as people can no nonger afford the neighborhoods they lived in for generations.

Sad, but population pressures are inevitable, and sucks to be on the biting edge of that natural progression.

Montana definitely is better, we lived near Flathead lake, up by Glacier Natl Park, in rural area that isn't affected that much, but Kalispell has been experiencing same effect. If you are overtly Pro conservative, and drive old lifted squarebodies with a gun rack, you generally get accepted as being an Anti- liberal, lets NOT bring socialism politics to Montana ex-Californian (personal experience). we fit in and became tight with the independent minded folk up there very quickly. It helped that we also were building pioneer spirit log homes from scratch, as they viewed that as something liberals patently hate to do anyway(hard hands on work, and lifestyle that celebrated independence and personal responsibility)

Hey MrOwl, I don't know how last Feb was like down by you last year, but it was record breaking up here. It was springlike until Feb when we got 56 inches of snow (previous record was 39.5). It's starting to look like the same thing again this year. Lots of rain and temps in the upper 40's lately. How is it looking down that way?

I'm not sure what the snow totals for the inland northwest are but it is way below avg. If we don't start getting some I fear it's going to be a bad fire season.

Like the places we pick huckleberries, morels or hunt and fish I'll never tell and have been sworn to secrecy. Cornbread made me lock the gate to CA after I got here anyway. Even if I told you, there are only 4 parcels of land left in the whole state. 3 are in really bad areas right next to a major highway or rail track and the last one is a picked over 1/4 acre parcel near the lava flow area from Craters of the Moon. You can forget anything in N ID, it is all taken.
Although, we may be selling soon like I said it is horrible here. We are in giant carpenter ant season. The ones with wings can lift a small house. Lucky I saw the dog being picked up be one the other day and stopped that or who knows where she may have ended up. I hear Wyoming is nice, you might want to look there.

I haven't seen any wolf spiders yet this spring. Those things are aggressive. I had one charge me while I was sitting on the toilet last year. Lucky I have a big foot.

As per the 4 parcels of land you are talking about, the land owners are only gonna sell to conservative right wing people who will fly a Trump flag on the property. But if you are moving here from CA, first you have to get through the armed citizens guarding the boarders (the gate kept getting left open). Than even before you apply for a loan, you have to sign a contract that you can't bring any CA way of thinking here or the state will deport you back to where you came from.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that part. I've been too busy. Just finished digging out from mud season, when the report of local Murder Hornets came out. Went out making sure those things aren't the giant hornets we have had an invasion of in the sheds. Pried open the stuck door (snow load crushed the frame, gotta fix that) and luckily I run fast, well that is until I tripped over a ground squirrel hole and severely twisted my ankle. Went to the Dr., nearly positive he was not a people Dr cause his course of treatment was just to shoot me. Where was I going with all this, oh yeah it is horrible here.

I think this is funny. If you need a heated driveway, than don't move to Idaho. Go back to Cali

Re: All stuff about Big Bear north
mountainart, Wed Sep 16 2020, 09:59AM

Or just get a vehicle where you don't have to ever shovel snow
......... We learned, when living near Flathead lake, Montana. All of the old timers and established families living on the ranches around never worried about all that wasted time every winter shovelling/clearing, as they had to do daily rounds over tens of miles of trails to check on livestock.

We drive same type of vehicles in Big Bear, and of the 7 years here, even through those huge snow dumps, never had to shovel, just drive and make tracks up over snow, and no problem, think the suburban in Dante's Peak.

We love the old squarebodies, in 4 low, go pretty much through anything, and easy to fix with duct tape and cheap tools on the fly.

Re: All stuff about Big Bear north
Cornbread, Wed Sep 16 2020, 11:09AM

I never shoveled at my cabin in Baldwin Lake. It's all dirt roads back there. But here I have a concrete driveway and the tires pack the snow down and turns to ice that is not easy to break up. I will never have a heated driveway and I don't mind shoveling. Plus I have a 9 year old son to help.

Re: All stuff about Big Bear north
MrOwl, Wed Sep 16 2020, 12:30PM

We had a pretty good wind storm last week. Lots of trees down, quite a few into homes and cars. People without power for a couple days. Most of the damage I saw was near downtown CDA. A contractor my wife works with had a tree fall into his house and another onto his truck. He had a tree fall on his truck in the 2015 wind storm too. A lady I work with, her in-laws had 2 trees fall into their house. It was crazy. Here are a few pic's (I didn't take any of these pictures)

Nobody has solar panels here. Not sure why but my guess would be is in the fall/winter months we get about 8 hours of daylight. And thats if its not cloudy.

Re: All stuff about Big Bear north
NShore.Allen, Tue Jun 29 2021, 05:04PM

Our winter solar generation off-sets the draw in summer providing our “net zero” energy bill..

Thought this was funny from Brundage

A visit from Ullr
Twas the morning before Christmas, and McCall was full of cheer
Not a creature was stirring, not even the town deer;

My fat skis were placed by the door with care,
In hopes that fluffy powder soon would be there;

The powderhounds were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of faceshots danced in their heads;

My boots in their warmer, and I in my jacket,
Had just woken up to the snow plow’s racket,

When on the brundage website the snow report was posted,
I sprang from the bed to see three inches was boasted!

Away to my car I flew like a flash,
Turned on the engine and checked for my pass

With the mountain above me and town now below
A tear in my eye for all this splendid light snow,

But when I checked my clock I finally became aware
I was 3 hours early to bluebird’s first chair!

Hi Kenai, you are nice and close to Brundage if you are a skier. We live in Meridian and have a place in the west side of McCall too. Spend more time in Meridian but i would like to change that but elevation is tough on my wife's heart.

We usually come up on 55 but occasionally take the 95 as it is a longer drive from Meridian. I get to New Meadows when I need to hit the hardware store. It is about 15 minutes to New Meadows from My place in McCall. We are close to Lardos.

I wish that was me but I would need a lot more powder skiing practice to attempt that. The 11" today at Tamarack wore me out.

It was on Sargent's Ridge which is in Brundage Mountain Resorts long term expansion plan.

It's the wild west in Idaho again. With the nationwide shortage of the drug that is used for lethal injection, Gov. Brad Little signed a bill allowing execution by firing squad.

I don't know when the last time Idaho executed someone, but we will probably never see the firing squad.

It got to -14 Saturday morning at my house, but I heard it was -17 in Athol. What did you get down too MGJ?

Post Falls library had pipes burst and is closed now. My son's friends school was cancelled today because of busted pipes. And when I woke up yesterday morning it was 45 degrees in my house. The heater went out over night.

Re: All stuff about Big Bear north
Mtngoat John⭐, Mon Jan 15 2024, 07:17AM

45, at least it is a dry cold. Yikes I’m sorry, did you get it fixed? I saw quite a few dispatches for broken water lines and fire sprinkler lines down that way.
The coldest I saw here was -18 with 20mph sustained winds and higher gusts. I saw Bonners got down to -21. Best line from someone I read Calgary is -30 right now so I don’t feel so bad.

Re: All stuff about Big Bear north

You northerners got way more spillover cold than us southerners. Only -3 here.

Re: All stuff about Big Bear north

Ya the heater is fixed. It ended up being a vacuum line clogged with ice. The tech does not know how any moisture got in there.

Next, we have a storm coming in tomorrow afternoon that is expected to drop 8+ inches. We are getting the whole winter in just a week and half.
