[poll] 2018/2019 SCM Snow Pool
Benny ⭐, Sun Oct 14 2018, 02:18PM

It's that time again! We're all crossing our fingers for a great winter season! There's a 70% likelihood we're going into another El Nino, which favors above normal precipitation across the southern third of the nation, including the southwest and our area!

I have a gut feeling this will be an early, good winter with near, to slightly above normal precipitation! (Rain & Snow)

Last year's snowfall amounts were well below normal, about half, only receiving approx. 30-40" depending on location. Average is still 62.1" for Big Bear Lake proper.

As always, the total(s) will be tallied on my website, bensweather.com, where you'll be able to watch it grow throughout the season.

Snowfall totals will be average out with each storm based on reports from trained weather spotters throughout the Big Bear Valley; i.e., if Fawnskin receives 8" and Baldwin Lake picks up 4" It'll go down as 6", etc.

There's of no purchase necessary, 1 entry per person and only 1 person for each guessed number, based on first come, first served basis. If your number is taken, you'll get the next highest available.

Entries are now officially open! We're looking for the total snowfall for the season, now through May 15th.

We'll accept entries now through November 15th, so there's plenty of time for everyone to partake!

The grand prize as always will be a coveted lifetime membership to Socalmountains.com and a $50 Amazon gift-card.

Simply reply to this thread with your snowfall forecast and I'll publish an updated list weekly.

Good luck and pray for snow!!!

Here's the latest update on winter snowfall predictions! With a low of 18" given by Cricket and a high of 186" by Skyline Drive. Hoping we lean towards Skyline's guess!

Still time to enter, keep in mind, if the number you requested was already taken, you were moved the next highest or lowest, whichever was closest.

Good luck to all, and may the highest total win!

Please check your numbers to ensure you're in there, if you want to change your guess let me know, now's the time. Otherwise entry is now closed.

The storm later this week has the "potential" to bring us some rain and around a half a foot of snow, give or take, cross your fingers!

Re: [poll] 2018/2019 SCM Snow Pool

Some fun statistics on snowfall for this past storm and for the season, courtesy of one of our users!

Lake Arrowhead: 15" this storm; 26.5" season

Running Springs: 23.5" this storm; 42.5" season

Arrowbear: 24.5" this storm; 46.5" season

Green Valley Lake: 34" this storm; 73.5" season

Snow Valley: 35”-43” this storm; 69-104" season

BBMR (Summit & Bear): 17-30" this storm; 79" season

Here in the Big Bear Valley we’re at about 40”, give or take depending on location, compared to our average of 62” in town and about 100” at resort level.

More wintry weather is expected in the coming weeks so we'll likely be adding to these totals!

If all the rain had been snow, there would only be three left.

Re: [poll] 2018/2019 SCM Snow Pool
Benny ⭐, Fri Mar 01 2019, 07:33PM

Which rain? When we got the 10" at the dam? It would likely have been more like 5 feet just from that one storm. Snow can't fall as fast as rain, so when the NWS calls for a qpf say of 1" and we're expecting snow, then we'll likely pick up around a half foot.

But then you have all the other variables like moisture content for one. Our snow usually falls at a 8:1 ratio (very wet), but that last colder storm was closer to 15:1.

So the old saying 1 inch or rain equals 1 foot of snow is incorrect, technically 1 inch of rain will equal 10 inches of snow, but mileage varies!

Polar Orbit wrote ...

Re: [poll] 2018/2019 SCM Snow Pool
Polar 🌌rbit, Fri Mar 01 2019, 08:38PM

As you pointed out, 5 feet is 60 inches, added to 68 inches is 128 inches, leaving two pickers. Drop the rain/snow numbers for wet snow, and I might still in contention at 99.

Re: [poll] 2018/2019 SCM Snow Pool
NShore.Allen, Fri Mar 01 2019, 08:43PM

I recall the Kuchera ratio. What is better for our conditions?

Re: [poll] 2018/2019 SCM Snow Pool
Benny ⭐, Fri Mar 01 2019, 09:20PM

Kuchera ratio could be applicable for our conditions, taking into account the generally warmer temps down here at the surface in our climate to calculate accumulation forecasts. Then again, with kuchera it's looking at temps in the lower half of the atmosphere, and given our altitude up from sea level, I s'pose that could confuse that theory/forecast.

That's trying to get down a lot more granular than we we forecast, hence the broad brush forecasts, 4-8"+, 6-12" etc.

If we could get the snowfall forecast down to..."tomorrow we'll have 3" of snow" that'd be awesome. But atmospheric conditions aside, there's too many other variables with our microclimate in SoCal. Maybe in the midwest when you have a more traditional cold front sweeping through, but the only thing predictable about our weather is its un-predictability!

I'm not exactly sure where Polar Orbit went with his statement, it's incomplete, or in Orbit as the name suggests.

PO, you originally stated "If all the rain had been snow, there would only be three left."

All what rain and three what? Our big rainstorm back in early-mid Feb?

Three feet of snow left on the ground if we received 5 feet with that storm?

Or three feet left if we received 128" of snow for the season?

Last month we received over 40" of snow, so for argument sake let's say 4 feet, much of which has already melted.

Maybe you can elaborate on your little algorithm you have going there?

This thread is for the snowpool, how much snow has fallen, not our snowpack.

On the 14th, we got 5 to 6 inches of rain. It would take at least 30 to 40 inches of snow to melt down to 5 inches of water, or am I missing something.

I’ve always wondered how much rain water the snow pack will hold before it releases water. Has kid I once took a pvc pipe into the snow pack, had 18” snow pack that produced 4 inches of water.

Roger does this when ever snow fall. He can tell you how much liquid precipitation we've gotten.

I'm out at 76. I shot a bit higher than our average.
That's funny Benny, overthunked, heh. We didn't get too slammed all at once, for such an abundant season the storms were well spaced apart.
If I remember, think it was that 2009-2010 winter.. that dumped 4-5 foot in just a few days? I was living on Wendy (not Anita then) they were running the giant snow blowers.

Last storm, for example - I measured 10.75" of snow and it melted to 0.90" of water.
But that was the freshly fallen snow. I haven't done it with the snowpack because usually the snow doesn't last very long around here.

2018/19 SCM SNOW POOL UPDATE:
Canvas Man is currently the leader in the SCM Snow Pool with 82 inches (so far 82 inches have fallen this season). Remember the snow pool goes through May 15th so even an inch of snow would topple his lead.

Here are the folks next in line after Canvasman for taking the win:
82 Canvas Man
83 BaughHumbug
84 Desert Steve
85 SSJ2012
86 Between Stars
87 kof218
88 Wave Slider
89 HBadger

Good Luck to all!

Yeah, that January 2010 snow I have at 5'. in upper Moonridge. We couldn't even come up to Big Bear the weekend of January 23 due to road closures and Big Bear was basically closed to non-residents by 1/25. A fulltimer man across the street in his house with his wife stuck down the hill and her elderly mother was ill in the house with him. Must have been quite the week for him! As I remember the schools up here were closed for at least a week. We hired a snow plow company for the first time ever since building our cabin in '02 to plow our driveway before we came up 1/29.. Always before husband with his snowblower could handle it. Not many storms since then have been that big! And the '10 storm really helped the lake level increase : )

Yes, Congratulations are in order for Canvas Man! Winner of the snow pool this season!!!

We received 82" of snow, a great year, compared to our average of about 62", add to that all the rainfall and our lake come up nearly 9 feet!

We still have a ways to go with our lake down approx 10 feet, but we're in much better shape then we would've been.

There is more precip in the forecast so hopefully we'll be adding to our rain and snowfall totals; congratz on an excellent snow forecast!!!

Is this going to be one of them 3-month summer, late snow season May then an early September snow? Seems like the snow just melted

I have a bunch work on the house planned for the Summer, so my guess is absolutely it’ll be short summer with above average thunderstorms. I’ll let everyone the week I plan on redoing my roof, so you’ll be prepared for major downpours

So now that it looks like it's finally over, I think a consolation prize of a lifetime membership should go to BetweenStars for getting the true total correct at 86 inches.
