Looking For a Decent Mobile Antenna

So I'm getting ready to put a mobile 2M/440 radio in my truck (actually trucks, I plan on moving it between my two trucks and one SUV) my question is what is a good antenna? I'm not opposed to using a Mag-Mount (and will have to on one of the trucks since it's on a lease) but for the other two trucks I don't mind drilling and permanently installing antennas.

Are glass-mount antenna's still no bueno? Both trucks have camper shells on them. Are there any decent antenna's which will attach to a fiberglass shell?

Any ideas are appreciated, thanks!

The best place for a mobile antenna is in the center of the metal roof, this way the roof is the ground plane. Other than that most duel band antennas will do what you need them to do.

my 2 cents,,,,, Rod KA6ROD

I have a Wilson 1000 and a Wilson 5000. Both are magnet mount. I also used the 5000 with a cab mount. Don't know if they would work with your radio. I also have a couple of RCI 2790 radios forsale. You definitely need to mount in the middle of the roof.

Thanks for the advice all, I was hoping to be able to get away from having to mount an antenna in the center of my roof, partially because it's a pain having to pull it off for low garages and car washes but if that's the best solution then I'll do it.

Thanks for the suggestion about going to the Wilson 1000, I'll look into it!

Hmm, well this might be easier than I first thought. I just realized that I already have Wilson 1000 antenna's on each of the trucks (for CB's, which i think I'm going to pull-out of everything but my tow rig). Their great antennas, I guess I didn't realize they were compatible with use on 2M/440 HAM frequencies.

The Wilson 1000 isn't compatible with 2M/440. Its a large 10M antenna that is built to cover much lower frequencies. I am sure you can cut it up a bit to get closer to your target frequency (2M), however, I have never done this myself (have no clue how your SWR would be). I am sure some other folks on here would have some input.
