We've had to use the Emergency Pet Hospital of Redlands and just want to say they were very kind and compassionate. The unfortunate part is we had to put our poor pup to sleep as he was suffering. They acted very quickly as we asked. While very sad, they offered to sedate for us to be there or just do it. We chose to stop the suffering right away. All that is to say, we hope you never need them but if you do, we recommend the Emergency Pet Hospital of Redlands.

What would be the best way to convince our various vets/clinics to set up a rotational emergency program for w/e and holiday coverage?

I have used local (when it was available) AND Victorville.
I don't think it is going to happen for two reasons:
1) Staff availability. You need a veterinarian available to respond, and possibly also a vet tech. There may not be enough vets up here to do that, even if they take turns.
Said on-call person will be responding from home; you can be half-way to Victorville in the time it takes for them to arrive at the clinic. If an animal is so severely injured, it can't survive the trip to VV, it may not survive the wait for the local vet to respond, either.
2) Cost. If an animal needs emergency surgery, and intensive care following surgery, you will need somebody to stay with and monitor that animal for HOURS. That is costly. Whoever is on-call will also likely have to be compensated for the time they are on-call, even if there are no call-outs, so that is another expense.
The extreme expense to provide that service will prevent many pet owners from taking advantage of local veterinary ER services. When it WAS available, it cost about four times what it costs to drive to Victorville and use that animal ER.

***ANIMAL EMERGENCY IN VICTORVILLE REOPENED AFTER A 4-DAY CLOSURE***
The closure due to Covid infection and inadequate staffing was resolved mid December.
Check previous page, and below, for more emergency vets, and vets with extended hours.
Unfortunately, none are in Big Bear.
