The Bald Eagles Return For The Winter
©ammy, Tue Oct 23 2012, 10:25AM

What will this upcoming winter bring us? Record numbers of Bald Eagle sightings? More baby Bald Eagles born around Big Bear Lake? I don't know, but I'm eager to see the eagles again! (Say "eager eagles" as many times as you can!)
I don't know for sure if we had eagles here all summer or not, but yesterday was the first time in a few months that I saw a pair of Bald Eagles together here in Big Bear:

Cammy,

Where did you see them? The kids will love to spot an eagle or two.

These 2 were near Grout Bay and Windy Point. Actually, Grout Bay is where I see eagles the most. I'm not sure if it's because I live in Fawnskin so I'm near Grout Bay more than say, Eagle Point or if the eagles really hang around here more.

This picture is over a week old now - I couldn't upload it while the forum was acting up. Anyway, I wanted to include it here in this thread.

I haven't seen eagles much lately. But just this week, I've had 2 separate sightings, both of juvenile bald eagles. First, R and I saw a single juvenile last Sunday afternoon:

Re: The Bald Eagles Return For The Winter
©ammy, Wed Feb 06 2013, 09:22PM

Then, yesterday morning, I saw another juvenile in the same tree which is right near the highway. I know the eagles get easily spooked so as I approached, I pulled over to the side of the road in a spot that was hidden from the eagle's view and got my camera out. Then I pulled up a bit farther so I could get a good view of the eagle. I put the truck in park, turned on my camera, zoomed in and opened the door to get out and take a picture. But the eagle was gone!
I figured it hadn't gone too far so I looked around and pretty soon spotted it in flight. I followed it for a little while and then it circled back close enough for me to get a decent picture:

Re: The Bald Eagles Return For The Winter
©ammy, Wed Feb 06 2013, 09:24PM

I continued watching the eagle in flight through the screen on my camera and noticed that I could hear ravens (crows? I always forget which we have up here) nearby. The eagle landed on a branch and just after it did, I noticed a raven approaching it. Wait, no, that's too big to be a raven!

Re: The Bald Eagles Return For The Winter
©ammy, Wed Feb 06 2013, 09:26PM

It was a second juvenile bald eagle!!
I followed the second eagle in flight for a bit as it was being chased by a couple ravens, but they soon disappeared from my view. I snapped a couple more pictures of the first eagle, then went on my way.

While watching the juvenile bald eagles I wondered if one of them is Jack (the bald eagle that hatched just about a year ago in Fawnskin). I don't believe anyone can be 100% certain that a particular eagle is Jack.

How absolutely exciting it must have been to see the two eagles! Lucky! GREAT pictures : )

GG at the Fawnskin Flyer said it was Jack!

While we can speculate, there is no way to know if it is Jack. He is not tagged, and his markings will change dramatically every year until he is an adult.

I don't doubt Jack's back. But which one is Jack?

I keep seeing what I think is the same 2 juvenile bald eagles around Fawnskin. This picture is from last Tuesday:

I haven't seen the juveniles in a while, but found this adult last Thursday near Fawnskin:

I got these pictures earlier this week:

Re: The Bald Eagles Return For The Winter

This juvenile bald eagle could be Jack, but I don't know if we could ever really know. Whatever the eagle's name, I think I caught it yawning.

Re: The Bald Eagles Return For The Winter
©ammy, Tue Dec 31 2013, 05:09PM

I saw this eagle back on Dec. 15th in the same tree where I saw the eagle in my above post. I'm not sure if it's the same eagle or not.

Re: The Bald Eagles Return For The Winter
©ammy, Sun Jan 12 2014, 06:05PM

Today's juvenile bald eagle sighting - a different eagle than the one we saw yesterday ( a lot more white on it's head).

This is a camera-shy eagle so it flew off soon after I got the previous picture.

Re: The Bald Eagles Return For The Winter
©ammy, Wed Feb 05 2014, 10:03PM

My mom spotted this eagle this morning as we were watching another juvenile bald eagle attempting to catch fish for breakfast. But that one gave up on fishing and flew off before I could get my camera out.

This juvenile eagle was actually up at Millerton Lake, north of Fresno, last weekend.

I hadn't seen any Bald Eagles in a while, so I dug this one up off the backup hard drive.

But really, I saw it along the north shore of BB Lake this morning.
