Has anybody had experience/success with planting bulbs (Big Bear)? My parents aren't up here full time. They come once a month or so to check on things and water plants. They had a row of evergreens up against the front of the house and had to remove them because they were combustible. This left an ugly block foundation exposed. I'm thinking of planting bulbs in that bare space. I'm spending all or part of the summer up here and will be able to water as necessary. I got some paper white narcissus as a gift years ago. I planted them in my Joshua Tree yard and those things keep coming back year after year but It's so hot that they don't last long.

Hi Eva,

I have some tulips and irises that magically appear every spring. I also get some daffodils and crocuses but I don’t know if they are bulbs. But I don’t do anything with them other than waiting for them to appear.

I think you may need a cold snap and then warm weather together going.

Good luck

Most of those bulbs last a couple of weeks in the spring only. Daffodils are the only ones the critters don't seem to like the taste of. You might be better off buying a wildflower mix seed and spreading it that will stay blooming all summer

Thank you! I did read something about putting bulbs in the freezer before planting. I'll stick the ones I have on hand in the ground and go get some wildflower seeds too.

I have volunteer tulips every year in spite of the fact the rabbits and other vermin seem to dig them up every spring The neighbor has lots of daffodils because the vermin dont like them.

Daffodil are not edible to squirrels, which will be an important feature when their population increases. Other bulbs will be ok for the current population, but will get wiped out when the are more squirrels. As pointed out, they only bloom for a couple of weeks. Lilacs may be a good choice for low maintenance shrubbery. Again, they only bloom for a few weeks. If watering is an option, Shasta daisies do well in BB and will bloom all summer. They winter over nicely.

When i live ata rental on red ant hill, there was he outline of a long(20 years?) abandoned flowerbed that sprouted paperwhite narcissus every year, and probably still does, hafta go by and look. My old house has tulips plsnted god knows how long ago that come up reliably every year.

Red October is one of my all time favorite s and anything by Tom Clancy. I also like Vince Flynn and Michael Connelly, the Lincoln Lawyer author!!

Simba is slightly bigger and more aggressive than the Cookster.

If you look right now, Simba is closer to the camera. You can see Cookies grey shoulders. Also note that they are starting to help themselves to food

For now, when they are sitting side-by-side, Simba appears darker because his feathers are a touch more developed. Cookie still has some grey down in his shoulders. But that will last only for maybe the next week.

Tom Clancy is a great writer. Any Vince Flynn fans out there?
