Any suggestions on when to pluck 'them apples' before the birds and chipmunks and bears and coyotes have pecked and scarfed the crop entirely away?

HHM pick one and see how they taste. Just tasted on of my Fuji apples. Really good but I know they should be a little sweeter. They should be ready soon. The Jonathans still a little bitter, maybe a couple of weeks. Our Arkansas blacks maybe mid Oct.

Hope this helps you out. I am in Erwin Lake so we have to take the micoclimate into consideration.

Fawnskin, here. Apple tree was here before I moved in and I don't know what kind of apple. Sort of medium small. You have Fuji! I have Envy. Thanks for the info, I'll try a taste test.

We have pears and apples that have never produced more than a few fruit that are LOADED. My plight is echoed throughout the valley. It would be cool to have a fruit swap meet and trade varietys of different

My pear tree had the most pears ever this year. Had 15 Vons size bags full of fruit. Been giving these away as well as making pear butter and canning many. Had cherries this year for the first time. Not a lot, about 3 big bowls full. Nectarine tree had about 2 dozen fruits on it. This tree blossoms first in the spring and any spring frost will do the most damage to this tree. Do not prune this tree until spring when new growth first appears. Nectarine tree is called Artic Queen. Has white sweet flesh. The plum tree is loaded, first time in 7 years, fruit still is not quite ripe. It's a French prune technically. Can't wait to make plum jam and plum dumplings. Apple tree, like everyone else, has a bounty of fruit. Oh, I heard that apples are ripe when you pluck one, cut in half and if the seeds are brown, they are ripe.

All these fruit have appeared this year because BBV did not get that notorious late freeze in the late spring. Finally all of the work put into fertilizing and pruning has paid off. Just in case you want to know, our plum and nectarine tree was planted bare root from a company called Trees of Antiquity, they do have a website, just search for it. They have sooo many different kinds of fruit trees and you can call them to see exactly what trees grow up here. They also have berries.

Well, I have got to get back to baking a Pear Cheddar pie, enjoy the bounty.

Blown away by the bounty and the information, thank you all. Mt.Man, whereabouts do you live? MicroClimate-wise?

Hazmat, live near Shay Meadows. Heard yesterday that a neighbor had no cherries on their tree, have no idea why. I also do water our trees via drip system on timer.

Gonna have to make some pear brandy now for those snowed in days...

We're in upper Fawnskin and we picked our apples Monday because they were attracting bears and coyotes. The Honey Crisp were perfect (albeit a tad small) but the Arkansas Black Spur were gross! May not have been ripe, but didn't want to attract the bear any more than it normally is!

Not a whole lot, yet. There are reports of a couple spun out vehicles through Arctic Circle, but looking at the Snow Valley cam, not much has accumulated on the roads. With the temp still above freezing roads should be ok, just wet for now. As temperatures drop below freezing later tonight, expect some ice/snow develop on the roadways so travel safely if you must!

There's is another decent band of snow moving in over the next hour or two.... [Click Here]

Another wave of moisture will move through the area over the next several hours with more rain and snow showers likely. The snow level could dip to around 6,000 feet with a couple inches possible. Travel safely and carry chains just in case!

No, you're right Fawn, hopefully next year if they have more eaglets they'll do the same thing but let them public vote on them. They can vote on them with a $1 donation each or something..... Would be a great fundraiser for Friends of the Big Bear Valley!
