Hello Big Bear friends and neighbors, after about one year of reading most or your posts and commentaries on everything from the weather to the best places to eat, I’ve decided to join the site. I like the friendliness of the site; it feels more like neighbor talking to neighbor over the fence.
As we all know, winter is just around the corner and I am slowly making preparations to meet it head-on. One of those preps is snow chains. Do any of you gentlefolk know of a good but inexpensive place in town (or out) to purchase tire chains for my SUV? My tires size is 265/65R/17 (just in case you happen to have some collecting dust you’d like to sell).
Thank you and it’s an honor to be a part of this site.
do not buy cheap chains. buy the best you can afford, as for where is the best place i don't know but would suggest you look around on the internet also. I don’t need your attitude thanks, I have one of my own!
Welcome to the site!! No good deed goes unpunished.
Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either. Just pretty much leave me alone.

MartinQ welcome to the fence line. Ernest T is right Get the best pair you can. Make sure your car and tires will take a good set without tearing up the fenders. I don't know the best brand anymore but I would look at weed, truck chains with crossbars if you can find them. I have had the same set for about 25 years. A pair of heavy duty truck chains Off a grader I think. They are a rough ride if the snow is light. Alwaays used on a FWD and two sets. They will get me through anything I should be out in and a little more. If you have not used chains get someone who knows how to use them show you how to put them on, take them off, and store them between trips. It is an art to do it right, and you should prctice before you need them. We have at least one thread we did a few years ago that covers just about everything on winter driving, and being ready for almost everything Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.

MartingQ, Welcome and I joined this site for the same reasons as you stated, very friendly and comforting for the down-hillerz
As for chains, whatever you purchase, practice practice practice. Putting these things on on the highway in the blizzard is no fun at all. Keep a pair of jersey cloth gloves and something to kneel on with the chains.
And make darn sure they don't rub, especially FWD cars. Check the clearance with the wheel turned hard left and right. You may have to use the cable style vs. chains for this reason and they wear out after a few uses.
I like the idea of tire chains.. means snow time in no time. A smile is a curve that can set things a lot of things straight

I think this is our winter tips thread. Probably a good time to take a refresher course. Remember if you can avoide the first storm that is when most people screw up and remember to slow down.
