Thanks BGS! For everyone else, I was trying to confirm that the following picture was taken in Big Bear. Note the sign that I though said "5 cent store" but now realize said "25 cent store" My picture has hung in my cabin for many years, because it shows our families connection to Big Bear for more than half a century (I believe the picture was taken in 1951). The picture is of my grandmother and uncle. Sadly, my uncle joined my grandmother yesterday. Everyone who knew him agrees that he was the sweetest man, and will be missed dearly.

Chads had several cabins behind for rental.
That part of town looks as it does because He was the one property owner who refused to give up easment land to make the highway wider and so there is that bump out in the right of way. Town would have looked different then it does. And I think a little of the charm would be gone.
I have my Grandfathers copies of the reports for the Pine Knot company who sold the lots and politics that we see today were not a lot different way back when. But the company was a lot more respectful of those who bought the lots then they would be today.
When people bought the lots they usually bought more then one. While the prices then would be considered pocket change today times were tough and people who could not make their payments were allowed to give up one lot and take the value and apply it to the other.
Town is the way it is because of back stabbing and deals that were the same then as now.
Safeway was there untill the late 50's then moved up to the corner of Knickerbocker & Pennsylvania before a second store was built in China gardens. about ten years later. For a time the valley supported two of the large supermarkets, as well as Reedy's, Emingers, Bear city market, and the star market right at the crest of red ant hill.
I think of all the stores in the village onlly a few have remained pretty much the same through their history.
McNeal's, brown bear gift shop, and Teddy bear have changed very little. A few restaurants and bars have survived with many name changes through the decades. A few liqour stores moved around as leases changed keeping the same name. People who remember town as it was may remember it completly different from someone who came befor or after and all can be right.
Sometimes the post cards are the only way to see how it was at any one time

I think Cornets signs read 5 10 and 25 cent store. They were a chain store. We just called it "the dime store" That store had a lot od space set aside for souviners. Many were produced localy by the Burton furniture company and they as well as the furniture have become collectable. I would bet when your cabin was built it had Burton furniture in it.

I still have all the old signs from my Grandpas gas station that was at the top of pine knot.

When I was looking just prior to buying this current cabin in Fawnskin, I looked at a cabin in Bear City that was filled with Burton furniture. It was listed as furnished. Went to see it a second time and the Burton stuff was gone. I walked away for a variety of reasons, but the Burton furniture almost made me overlook all the other stuf...

I remember Cornets. We called it the Five and Ten. It was a great place to buy sewing and supplies.

The Navajo building is still MOSTLY the same too, although the downstairs has been redone a couple of times.

Anyone remember the name of the welding shop that used to be on the corner of Village and Pine Knot?
