The State is responsible for wildland fire protection in the "SRA" (state responsibility area) however there are agreements in different areas where one agency will protect the wildland in exchange for the other agency doing likewise elsewhere.

With the exception of a portion of the City of Big Bear Lake, the US Forest Service has wildland protection responsibilities, not only for the National Forest System lands, but the "SRA" within the boundaries of the national forest in San Bernardino and Riverside county.

That being said, southern California has lead the nation on the mutual aid concept since the great firestorm in 1970 prompted a much more focused look at the issue of helping out in time of need.

Hope this helps a little, you should call Calfire or your local fire protection district for more information.

Aha! Thanks for the info! That's the missing piece I was looking for - Because of the absence of Cal Fire stations up here, I assumed there was no SRA close by.
