bills grandson posted this info in another thread here:

I am sure some have been to this site. I understand the roof has given up the ghost since these were taken. There is an old road (sort of) that leads to it that makes a decent trail. There is also parts of a crashed plane along the way. One that killed three or four people and was the subject of a week long search.

and also this:

No that is part of a mine in Holcomb valley.
I kind of hesitate to point out some of these things location as the Forest Service has made a habit of getting rid of things like this.
I would like to see as many people as possible enjoy these things while they are stil around. What I know of is a small fraction of what is out there

So R and I took a drive and the difficult hike out to it today to get some pictures:

Here's some of what was left just a ways below the cabin:

Somewhere between where we parked the truck and where we found the cabin, but nowhere near the cabin, we came across this. I have no idea if it was part of the plane crash or not:

Those were some MASSIVE logs on the cabin! And if there's a "road" to the cabin, we sure didn't find it! The brush is THICK and there are lots of LARGE rocks that made the climb a challenge! Was cool to see and imagine the activity the place must have seen!

Man it has really gone downhill since I was last up. At that time the roof was still holding on and there was even a little left of a loft that was inside. and parts of a stove.
I believe the tank is a water tank from the cabin. Small plane crashes are almost all aluminum. WITH the engine and cockpit gone there was just bits and pieces. The plane was flying East to West and hit about 5o feet up from where you would have walked out spreading up the hill a short distance.
O.K. about the mountain.
First off that is the edge of the area we called monster mountain. The site where my friend and some buddies first encountered the "bigfoot" that we spent years looking for. Always well armed it was a very strange mountain. We never saw anything living on the hill, and you would not hear even a bird. At night the rocks give off a Luminescence that adds to the spookey feeling we got. My girlfriend (ex wife) and I had our run in with it about 1/2 mile down the van dusen canyon road several years later.
Whatever there was about the place has changed and not it is like everywhere else. Except for the glowing rocks.
Now the history of the mountain.
It is the area called the seven ledges of gold. Named for the veins that run East to West through much of the area. There have been hits along the mountain where many mines hit paying streaks of gold and silver. It is thought that the gold found in the valley came from there.
Since so much has changed over the years it is hard to tell what it would have looked like when things were more organized. In that ten square miles gold is where you find it is the rule. There has never been a mother lode found, and there may not even be one. But there is still a lot more there then was ever found And any spring some hiker who keeps his eyes open may find any of the lost mines in the area

Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.

the road is easiest to find from the cabin. I'm sure you used at least part of it on the way out. There are trees across it in places. But it makes the bottom part much easier.
It may take a little looking but if you park near the power pole that is different the road starts up the hill from there. it is a very rough narrow cut in the rocks. If you look careful you can see that some work was done on it. Once you get past that just follow what would seem to allow a small car to travel. It winds between the rocks and is much easier to see once it starts the climb.
Once my rock formation is found I will give you guys the directons to my favorite area of all. It is where I have found the most gold and also think there may have been Spanish mining in the area including an overgrown "road" and some other very interesting things. It was funny that I found a campsite where people stayed for sometime. Then later found family picyures of the same place.
I also think I know where the Octegon house was.

I think we found the cut in the rocks you were referring to. We went through there, but quickly lost any sign of a road above it.
The rock formation is going to be a bit more difficult to find...

no s.... about harder to find. I have been trying to find it for years. It is possible it will be found very soon.
from the cut you just wander through the rocks staying toward the right.
from the cabin it is not far NW to get to a large pit area that was the mine. I never looked much farther as it is very rough country but as far as I know there is nothing else

It woke me up. We rarely feel them in our house but this one was a pretty good shake. Must've been fairly shallow. Anyone else feel it?

So lets see- kids were in a tree building a fort, dropped a hammer, hit Goat in the face which caused him to crash into a camp fire where they were making fajitas thus burning his hand and getting fajita all over his shirt! Does that explain it?
