Evacuation zone widened beyond 20km from Fukushima nuclear plant The government on Friday added some towns outside a 20- kilometer radius of the crisis-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to the list of areas covered by its evacuation directive, due to concerns over high cumulative levels of radiation.

All residents in Katsurao, Namie and Iitate and some in Kawamata and Minamisoma in Fukushima Prefecture must leave by around late May, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said at a news conference.

The announcement came a day after the government declared the 20-km zone around the tsunami-stricken plant a no-go area. (Kyodo )

A contamination map revealing radiation levels at about 150 places in the Fukushima No. 1 power plant was released Saturday by troubled Tokyo Electric Power Co.
The beleaguered utility, known as Tepco, updates the data periodically to help its workers navigate radiation hazards at the crippled nuclear plant in Fukushima Prefecture. The power plant lost its cooling systems when it was hit by the mega-quake and tsunami on March 11.

One finding acquired from the map's data as of Wednesday night is that a piece of concrete debris near the No. 3 reactor was emitting a nearly lethal 900 millisieverts per hour of radiation. (Japan Times )

The U.S. military has almost terminated its Operation Tomodachi relief activities in areas hit by the March 11 quake-tsunami disaster, while it will continue to airlift personnel and supplies as needed, the Japanese Defense Ministry said Sunday. It also pulled out of the joint Japan-U.S. coordination center set up at the Japanese Self-Defense Forces' joint task force command in Sendai and virtually closed it by leaving 1 person behind..

More Cooling work for the Fukushima Power Plant to be started .. More info here Tepco on Friday started increasing the amount of water it is injecting into the No. 1 reactor at the Fukushima No. 1 power plant in hopes of providing stable cooling for the damaged nuclear fuel inside. Tokyo Electric Power Co. plans to fill the reactor's primary containment vessel with enough water to submerge the fuel over the next 20 days or so, and start operating by June an air-cooling device it hopes will reduce the temperature of the water circulating around the reactor, company officials said. Kan orders slaughter of all livestock in 20-km hot zone
Prime Minister Naoto Kan on Thursday told Fukushima Gov. Yuhei Sato to slaughter all farm animals within a 20-km radius of the stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant. The government's decision last month to formally declare the 20-km evacuation zone around the plant off-limits has been preventing farmers from feeding their livestock, leaving them to starve. According to the farm ministry, there were an estimated 3,500 cows, 30,000 pigs, 675,000 chickens and 100 horses in the hot zone before the March 11 disasters threw the power plant into chaos.

So lets see- kids were in a tree building a fort, dropped a hammer, hit Goat in the face which caused him to crash into a camp fire where they were making fajitas thus burning his hand and getting fajita all over his shirt! Does that explain it?
