With recent rains, and very typical with our summer monsoons, after a fresh rain when the ground is very cool & moist, condensation takes place at ground level, rising as small patches of fog from the ground, some times mistaken for smoke & obviously quite common after a thunderstorm so a lot of people mistake it for a lightning snag (tree or vegetation hit by lightning). Below is an example of several water dogs after a fresh rain...
Waterdogs certainly look like smoke from a small fire. The best thing to do is observe them for a few minutes. Most waterdogs will dissipate within 5-10 minutes. There's no rush to call these in, since even if they were a fire, they would obviously not be spreading rapidly (since a fire that is spreading rapidly will be obvious and easy to distinguish from a waterdog.) Good idea to bump this thread, Benny! Heard lots of reports of water dogs called in today as we sat up at Butler, and saw some out in the wilderness. What doesn't kill me does NOT make me stronger. Watch them for a couple of minutes... They usually move up and away pretty quickly and are not replenished from the ground, unlike smoke could be from a lightning strike to a tree. The other thing I've come to realize in reference to smoke reporting is that if it's an out of control fire that's gonna burn across the forest in 2 hours, it will be obvious that it's smoke and 911 should be called so the appropriate agencies can take action. If you're unsure if it's smoke or a water dog or a cloud (marine layer, cumulus, fog, etc.) stop and watch it for a couple of minutes.
