Johnson Grade is the 18 route to Lucerne. Named after the guy who first cut the road. Back then it was also known as "Snubbing Post Grade". Sound familiar? Don't confuse with "Sullivan's Curve", which is the long climb up Cajon made by the trains. That's considered a major feat of engineering for the time, and of course is still used. However, that was a major project. Johnson's was done by one guy and his mules or oxen. He had to be one tough S.o.B. a bit late to the party.. you don't need the waiver to ride the sky chair if you are walking. Only bike riders need the waiver. The walk down is a different path this year and steeper.
