I come to this site for information, and to read about peoples day to day lives. I don't post alot, but I do read alot. The problem with political stuff, is it spills over into ever other aspect of the site, like it or not. Unfortunatly, thats the way it is. It just seems the site was a little friendlier when the politics went away. With most everyone on the site living here in the valley (I said most, not all) someones going to get their feeling hurt. Now, I never met anyone here personally, with the exception of Craig and Benny, I can say that I'm always amused with how people will cop an attitude in some threads. Being this is a small town, would this kind of attitude happen without the internet? I would hope not. So while I appluad your idea to bring back the discussion of politics to the site Craig, Is it worth the bickering? I know 1st ammendment rights are important, but I for one could do without the.... sorry to say.... Hate, that come with political disscusion. I belong to a site that has people from all around the globe, and they all get along Great. We had a political forum during the election, and it started causing problems, So it went away. Now everyone is civil to one another, the bad feelings are gone, and Everyone enjoys the site. It is a family site, There is a two strike rule, so you post hateful or inappropriate material, you won't be around long. Now I'll probably never meet any of the people on that forum, but I consider many of them long distance friends, And would help them in anyway possible. While SCM is more of a local community site, I would like to see it become a little less mean spirited.
I was one of the ones against bringing politics back. But, in the period that it was gone this site sometimes more resembled a morgue than a discussion forum. Less people on a site makes the site less significant in the eyes of the search engines. Less people to a site means the advertisers get less exposure and less business.
So, what was Craig to do but bring it back. Right or wrong, politics seem to be the topics that run the media (talk radio, cable news, online forums). The good thing about this site is that if we don't want to participate in political discussions we can simply just ignore them. Ah, there's an idea! I wonder if it's possible to be able for each member to set politics as ignore much like Rim has ignore for people you don't like. That might solve the problem. That, and if people would leave political discussions out of the other threads. Perhaps a brushing up course on PolySci 101 might help some on what is political.
I don't like to see it either Dave, however, there is no reason for Debbie to leave. I don't understand how allowing all topics to be discussed within the governing of the new TOS being a problem. I haven't seen all of the other non political forums crash and burn since this change, and if they did, I would be on it. I make a policy change and before anything can even happen, people say they can't take it anymore? I just don't get it and I hope you can see my position here. What I have changed is going back to the way SCM was for many years (from its inception in 2002, just more peeps).

Since I joined this site I have made some wonderful and hopefully life long friends. You have all taught me a great deal. Not sure if it is the economy or the weather or what, but I am done. I used to love coming to a site where people helped each other and had fun together. That seems to be gone from here. I waited for it to come back, but it doesn't seem to be making it. I deal with enough arguing and pissing contests during the day at work, no need to endure it voluntarily in the evenings.
Thanks for all the good times and I hope everyone learns to get along. See ya around!
Now, that's what I DON'T like to see.
Ok, I have been lurking, but figure I need to straighten out what I said. I am not visiting regularly anymore because of the negativity. Not because the political thread was brought back. I thought I had explained that in a PM to Craig and that I supported his bringing back the political thread. I obviously was not clear.
When I joined the site many years ago it was fun and a place to come to laugh and share good times. The members wanted to help each other and those in the community. In the last several months, that is not what I see here anymore. People are snapping at each other and the giggles are gone. It is disappointed to read all of that, whether it is in the political thread or other threads. I don't believe I am the only one feeling this way, so I thought I would post about it to make people think a bit. I guess I was wrong, you all still want to snap and bite at each other over the smallest things. Lots of old regulars are not here anymore or don't post anymore. I think that says something about how the atmosphere has changed.
I will continue to lurk and will be here, if i am needed, for emergencies, but my daily visits will stop for now. Maybe when the negativity decreases and the fun comes back, so will I. I'm sorry if I am offending anyone but I think some things just need to be said.
3B, very well said. Do you want a job? The pay is really good here I will most certainly look into some of the suggestions you made. Thank you!
Debbie, you are correct. My statement was incorrect because you did say you agreed with the changes. I guess my only question is why you would agree with the changes and then decide to no longer participate here. That I guess is what doesn't make sense to me. Negativity has not spread all over the forums anywhere I can see, so I don't understand. What I have promised since the changes is to do my best to ensure that things are kept civil and to enforce the new TOS. I promise to do my best as that is all I can do. I hope everyone who uses this site also does their best to keep things civil, have fun, and enjoy a free service. Remember, this is your community and as many have stated, its up to you to decide what to post and what to read. WINTER IS OVER AND SUMMER IS ALMOST HERE!
You just nailed the problem. A lot of people lurk, won't come on, when they do, they tend to have nothing positive to say, just ho hum, blah blah, and some occassional attacks, etc & move on. Don't see many people coming on in defense of the good we have done here, which we have done a lot of in the past, I guess a lot of people just have short term memory.
It appears a lot of people are just bitter lately, quite a bitter society if you will. And I assure you it's a worldy thing, I see it at work, out in public, at the grocery store and here.
As of late, even some desperate people have threatened to sue this free, non profit, comminity public service forum after signing in on their own recognasense, uploading their own photos, inputting their own personal data then complaining after the fact it's there, then argueing why it is, nobody forced them to do it, you enter your own info at your discression, only to turn around a threaten with a lawsuit?
I hope we can all learn to be a little more peaceful, civil & get along as for all you know the world could end tomorrow... FOLLOW @BENSWEATHER NOW ON TWITTER!
Craig, I think I have enough hats right now and I may be getting a bigger one next year. Thanks, though!
Benny, you are right! The economy has made MANY people bitter and ugly. I see it daily in MANY places as well. Unless someone is 90+ in age they have never faced such terrible economic times.
As far as the issue of negativity on the site and it was never that way before, I just offer a few names: JimG, Cantor, and a few others. Some of those old conversations got really heated and nasty. In the end, we lived through them.

Debbie Dooooo I think that what is posted is a reflection of the times we are going through
It is getting harder to find things to be happy about. while there still are a lot of good things sometimes you have to look harder to find them. I haven't noticed the bitterness in most forums but there is a lot of sadness and depression going around
I really hate to admit that Rodney Kings quote is one of the best I have ever heard. even though I can think of few people that would be less qualified to have said it. Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.

BG, there is bitterness, and lots of sadness and of course depression too. What Debb dooo is wanting is fun and escape I think, this is a site that I use to get away from my troubles and enjoy interacting with other perps, ah peeps. Here we are family and friends a close community of people that have a need to be with others be it on line or the occasional gettogether. I know you understand this as you share your BB years with us even though you no longer reside in BB and let me tell you, you need to put a book together because you do know a lot of the history and probably where the bodys are buried Debbie Doooo I hope you interact more in the future and that this place we call 2nd home returns to the happy/sunny side of life. I still enjoy it and just skip over the places I don't wish to visit. I don’t need your attitude thanks, I have one of my own!

I happen to have very strong opinions about a lot of things....but the one thing that I always say is that I may strongly disagree with you but I would defend your right to express your opinion as long as you will defend my right to express my opinion without threats or demeaning.
Just recently one of a same group did not understand that concept and the others in the group paid a high price for all of us, for they understood.
At the pro/anti tea party regarding amnesty up in BB, how interesting it would have been to have the same exact banners on both sides of the street.... I DISAGREE WITH THE OTHER SIDE ACROSS THE STREET BUT I WILL DEFEND THEIR RIGHT TO EXPRESS THEIR OPINIONS!
State what your opinion is, however keep the emotions in check....you will actually get more people interested in reading your posts...
